# Conversations

> Read and reply to your Teams chats and channels in Whorl, start a chat, react, attach files, and see how conversations work without Microsoft 365.

Conversations are the chats and channels you take part in, such as your Teams chats. You read them, reply, react, attach files and start new chats from Whorl, so a decision made in a chat can lead straight into a Thread.

Conversations is in the sidebar. With Microsoft 365 connected, it shows your Teams chats and channels. See [Microsoft 365](/microsoft-365). Until you connect, the page says your Teams chats and channels show up here and that you can reply to them from Whorl.

## Find a conversation

The list has filters:

- **Type**: **All**, **People** (chats with one other person), **Groups**, **Meetings** or **Channels**.
- **Availability**: **All**, **Can reply** or **Read-only**.
- **Ordering**: **Recent activity**, **Name A–Z** or **Name Z–A**.

Choose **Clear filters** to see every chat and channel.

## Read and reply

Open a conversation to read it. Unread conversations are marked, and **Mark as read** and **Mark as unread** are in the conversation menu.

On a message, use **Reply** in a chat, or **Reply in thread** in a channel. You can react to a message. The message menu also has **Copy text**, **Copy message** and **Copy link**, and for your own messages **Edit message** and **Delete message**. Deleting asks **Delete this message?** first. Images have **Copy image** and **Download image**.

A reply in a channel opens its own view, and **Back to channel** returns you to the channel.

Write in the message box and choose **Send message**. The box offers **Mention people, Captains or Threads**.

## Attach files

Attach up to 10 files to a message. Each file can be up to 10 MiB, and the files together up to 25 MiB. Files in your OneDrive or SharePoint libraries open in a new tab and say they are not in your Files. See [Files](/files).

## Start a chat

Choose **New message**. Pick one or more people under **People**, or choose **New group chat**. Fill in **To** and **Message**, then choose **Create**. If Whorl cannot start the chat, it says **Couldn't start the chat. Try again.**

## When a send is not confirmed

If Teams does not confirm a send, reply, edit or reaction, Whorl does not guess. You see **Send not confirmed** or **Reply not confirmed**, with "Whorl couldn't confirm this went through. It will appear in the conversation if it did." Check the conversation before you send it again. See [Microsoft 365](/microsoft-365#write-results).

If your Microsoft sign-in expired, the page says to reauthorize your account in Integrations: **Settings → Company → Integrations**.

## Conversations in Whorl

> Conversations that live in Whorl are an experimental feature. An owner or admin turns on **Whorl Conversations and Calendar** for everyone in **Settings → Company → Experimental features**. Until then, only Teams chats appear. See [Experimental features](/experimental-features).

With it on, people in your Organization can send each other direct and group chats that live in Whorl. They are marked **Whorl only**.

With the experiment on, a company that uses Microsoft 365 can keep conversations in Whorl instead of syncing them with Teams. In **Settings → Company → General**, switch **Conversations sync with Teams chats** off. Turning it back on can link a Whorl chat to a Teams chat with the same people: the notice says **Linked with your Teams chat**, or **Teams chats were off. These stayed in Whorl.** when they stayed apart.
