Tasks

A Task is a piece of work in a Space, with a status, an owner and a place to talk about it. People, Captains and Threads all file, assign, move and comment on the same Tasks. Each Task gets a short key from its Space, such as SEE-34, so you can find it and mention it.

Open Tasks in the sidebar to see the Tasks in the active Space.

Find your Tasks

The list groups Tasks by status: Backlog, To do, In progress, In review, Waiting, Done and Cancelled. Closed groups start folded.

  • For you shows the Tasks you created or hold, and the ones your Captains created or hold.
  • Assigned to me shows only the Tasks assigned to you.
  • All shows every Task in the Space.

In your personal Space, Created by me shows the Tasks you filed, and All Spaces shows Tasks from every Space you are in.

Switch between List and Board to see the groups as rows or as columns. On the board, drag a Task to another column to change its status. Select several Tasks to change their status, assignee or due date at once, or to Delete them.

Create a Task

  1. Choose New task.
  2. Type a title. The description takes Markdown, and you can attach files to it. Attachments are saved in the Space's Files.
  3. Set the status, priority, assignee, due date and labels.
  4. Choose Create task. If you assigned a Captain or a Thread, the button reads Create and start.

To break a Task into smaller pieces, open it and choose Add sub-task.

Assign a Task to an agent

A Task can be assigned to a person, a Captain or a Thread. Choose A new Thread to start a Thread just for it.

When a Captain or Thread is assigned, it starts on the Task at once, or as soon as its current run ends. The Task page shows the agent's conversation beside the Task while it holds the Task.

Comment and mention

Comments use the same composer as a Thread. Type @ to mention people, Captains, Threads, files and Notes.

  • Mention a Captain or Thread to ask it something. It wakes, reads the Task and replies in the comments.
  • When an agent filed the Task, your comment or closing the Task wakes that agent once, so it can answer or move on.
  • An agent's own comments and edits never wake anyone.

Talking to a comment with your voice writes a draft for you to check. It never sends the comment for you.

Tasks in Threads and Captains

A link to a Task in a Thread or Captain opens the Task in a tab beside the conversation, so you can read and change it without leaving.

A Captain files a Task whenever a person must decide or unblock something. Its Digest lists those Tasks under Needs you when they are assigned to you and under Needs others when they wait on someone else. When you answer or close the Task, it leaves the list.
